iPod classic staying locked ...

Hi
I have a strange problem with my iPod classic 120 GB from few days. It gets locked(or on hold you can say) on its own. Initially if it happened.I used toggle the hold button (turn on hold and turn off) and it used to work fine. Now even that doesn't work. On toggling the hold button, the "Lock" icon goes off on screen, but as soon as I click on Wheel or the select button,the "Lock" icon on the tops appears again and the the iPod behaves as it is put on hold. It becomes unresponsive completely. Really don't know what to do

Solution tried:
1. Tried to reset the iPod. But it worked.
2. Did a restore from iTunes. But this didn't work either.

Can some tell me the solution please? is this hardware/software related?
